District Distance Education Committee - Minutes, June 12, 2007 Meeting

Present: Pamela Atkinson, Wendy Bass, Linda Delzeit, Eric Ichon, David Jordan, Mark Lampert, Paul McKenna, Bob Richards, Richard Skidmore.

1. The meeting was called to order at 10:05 AM. Minutes from the last meeting were not available.

2. Bob Richards discussed the Etudes-NG job preparation process and the manual he has been working on. Copies of the manual were distributed. It was reported that Vivie can not support two files concurrently, therefore due to multiple and overlapping start dates in the summer session and the need to have shells ready for the fall term, the Etudes-NG Job Preparation Procedures will remain the same for the summer and fall course. Sections numbers need to be identified and sent to Kanthi at District.

3. Student uploads to courses. The summer terms conclude on August 18, summer uploads will end Aug 17th. Fall uploads will begin Aug. 20 and will end Dec. 14th. Winter uploads will begin Dec. 17th.

4. Mark Lampert reported that at Valley they have created LAVC_Support. Faculty are asked to include LAVC_Support in each of their class websites which then allows Mark assess to the sites to assist students.

5. Best Practices, Richard Skidmore discussed his distance learning letters which he distributes at Pierce. In his discussion he identified one key approach he labeled “Communicate,” Respond to student promptly and provide a receipt to all submitted materials in an email. Etudes provides students an automated response. Dr. Skidmore distributed a sample of one of his distance learning letters.

6. Eric reported that West LA provides a workshop in online pedagogy.

7. Linda Delzeit was unable to attend the meeting so the demonstration of PadCasting was canceled. Linda is willing to make the presentation at an in-person meeting in the future.

8. The next meeting will be July 24, 2007, via CCCConfer. David Jordan volunteered to set up the conference call in procedures.
